Greek Messiav mashiyach
maw-shee'-akh
1) anointed, anointed one
1a) of the Messiah, Messianic prince
1b) of the king of Israel
1c) of the high priest of Israel
In the books of the Prophets the coming of the Messiah was predicted with
stunning clarity. The smallest details were recorded over a period between 1000-500 BC. Details concerning his birth, life,
death and subsequent to his death were meticulously detailed that there be no misunderstanding.
Firstly he would have to be a descendant of Abraham: -
Gen. 12:1 ¶ Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country,
and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make
thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee:
and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
He would also have to be descended from Isaac: -
Gen. 17:19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and
thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his
seed after him.
He would also be descended from David: -
1 Sam 7:12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy
fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
13 He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of
his kingdom for ever.
14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I
will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:
15 But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from
Saul, whom I put away before thee.
16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee:
thy throne shall be established for ever.
17 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did
Nathan speak unto David.
He would be cut off from the land of the living after a period of
69 weeks of years (483 yrs) from the going forward of the command to rebuild Jerusalem. This would place it fully within the
reign of King Herod.
Dan 9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth
of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore
and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for
himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall
be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
He would come originally from Bethlehem.
Mic 5:1 ¶ Now gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid
siege against us: they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek.
2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands
of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have
been from of old, from everlasting.
His mother would be a virgin when she conceived: -
Is 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin
shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
He would enter Jerusalem triumphantly on a donkey: -
Zec 9:9 ¶ Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem:
behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt
the foal of an ass.
He would be put to death having his hands and feet pierced:
-
Ps 22:16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed
me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
Zec 12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants
of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall
mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness
for his firstborn.
He would go to his death quietly, but not for himself: -
Is 53:4 ¶ Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we
did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised
for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own
way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he
is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation?
for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death;
because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
10 ¶ Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief:
when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the
pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied:
by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
- Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall
divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors;
and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
These are just a few of the many prophecies concerning the Messiah. It would
be possible for many people to fulfil one, or more of these prophecies, but only one person in history has fulfilled them
all!
Who was born in the town of Bethlehem as the result of a virgin conceiving?
Who would also be a direct descendant of Abraham, of Isaac and of
David?
Whose triumphal entry into Jerusalem had been on a donkey?
Who died during the period of Herods reign in the first half of the first
century, 483 years after the command was given to rebuild Jerusalem by Xerxes King of the Persians?
Whos death would be by having his hands and feet pierced?
Just a small portion of similar prophecies that were only ever fulfilled
by One man!
